14:00 – 14:30Q&A

Abstracts

  • Rubik's Cube

Prof. Evgeny Khukhro: Group Theory: Algebra of Transformations: Every mathematical object has its own group of structure-preserving transformations. Group Theory studies groups in their own right; it is a dynamic rich area of Algebra, with many open problems, where new results and methods appear all the time. The lecture introduces the idea of a group, illustrated by examples of groups of transformations and by calculations in an abstract group. Breakthrough results on greater commutativity of group operations are explained, along with links to recent group theory research by Lincoln algebraists. The lecture slides are available here.

  • Dice

Prof Andrei Zvelindovsky & Owen Cockroft: Estimating pi by rolling dice: This activity demonstrates a method for estimating pi from the results of rolling dice, that involves some advanced mathematics including complex analysis and prime numbers.

Awards Ceremony for Lincoln Mathematics Challenge 2020/2021

The Awards Ceremony for Lincoln Mathematics Challenge 2020/2021 will be held as an online meeting on MS Teams on Saturday the 13th of February at 15:00 and will last about an hour.

All participants, their teachers, friends, family and members of the public are welcome!
As a participant you will receive a meeting invitation link. If you are a member of the public – please email to maths@lincoln.ac.uk before 12 February to receive an invitation to the online event.

The ceremony will also include a public online lecture
by Prof. Evgeny Khukhro
“The role of Algebra in Mathematics”,
which will have interesting facts but also open the door to see a glimpse of modern algebra research.

This year there will be no physical trophies – all trophies will be virtual as an image and will be sent by email.

Maths Group Study presentations

On Friday 9 March the Year 1 maths students presented their work in the Group Study component of the “Professional Skills and Group Study” module. Nine teams used Powerpoint to report on their study of different topics in pure and applied mathematics. In each team, the students were taking turns to present their contribution to the group report, with general introductions and conclusions. Questions were asked by the examiners Prof Evgeny Khukhro and Dr Manuela Mura.

Poster session in Maths Pedagogy module

On 21 December the 3rd year students taking the optional Maths and Physics Pedagogy modules had a poster presentation in the foyer of Isaac Newton building.  The posters discussed the knowledge development of a particular topic from the National Curriculum for secondary education in mathematics or physics, including  possible or existing misconceptions and potential inhibitors to learning. The session marked the completion of this quite successful innovative module run jointly with School of Education (module coordinator Dr Rachel Sharpe). The session was also attended by members of staff and by teachers from the participating schools in Lincoln. Food and refreshments were provided by School of Maths and Physics.
